History
Coffey County Hospital first opened in June 1954, as a
church sponsored organization, on the same site where it now stands. The
hospital was purchased by the county in 1967 and has been operated by
that entity since that time. When original operations began, the hospital
had 22 beds, an emergency room, two operating rooms, a laboratory, and a
radiology department.
From the beginning, the hospital has experienced
steady upward growth, including several additions and renovations in
recent years. Coffey Health System prides itself on being a family
oriented health care facility with all of our employees and physicians
giving care that comes from the heart.
Waverly and LeRoy Rural Health
Clinics were added to the hospital services in 1985. They are still in
operation and Jim Oehlert, Physician Assistant, sees patients daily at
each site. The Allen Woods Conference Center, new Physical Therapy
quarters and a former clinic ares now used for administrative offices was
added to the south end of the original building in 1991. The CCH Home
Health Agency began operation in the summer of 1992. The objective of
Home Health was to bring the quality of health care of CHS to the homes
of patients in a five county area. In 1993, The Meadows, an assisted
living facility, opened its doors. This offers senior citizens the
opportunity to maintain independence, while having minimal assistance
with daily activities. It was also in 1993 that the Coffey County
Hospital board of directors chose the name of Coffey Health System, which
includes all entities operating by and under the direction of Coffey
County Hospital.
In 1994, a major expansion to the existing hospital came
with the passing of a bond from local community support. This expansion
almost doubled the square footage by adding a new emergency department,
ambulance bay, new EMS living quarters, remodeling of radiology and
laboratory, and a new physician clinic with individual suites for five
physicians and the outpatient clinic. In 1997, Coffey Health System
acquired the Sunset Manor Nursing Home in Waverly, branching CHS out in
yet another direction of health care. After this acquisition, CHS now
employs over 220 dedicated people and continues to grow.
CHS continues to
grow, not just in size but also in the quality and service that we offer.
2001 has brought another expansion to the existing hospital. Another
decision by voter approval which is adding a new patient wing with 20
patient beds, two Labor, Delivery, Recovery, Postpartum (LDRP) rooms, a
new kitchen, dining and meeting area, and new outpatient clinic area. We
are now pleased to have five family physicians and a general surgeon on
staff at Coffey Health System. The new expansion has a scheduled
completion date of November 2001.
Coffey Health System is a proud member
of the Coffey County community and we strive to provide the best
healthcare to our community and the surrounding areas.
